The Lhasa Old City research project was introduced at the 7th Seminar of the International Association for Tibetan Studies held 1995 in Austria. In 1998, the Lhasa Development Maps were published, showing the urban development of Lhasa in three stages, 1948, 1985 and 1998, and chronicle the disappearance historic buildings. Also published in 1998 was "The Old City of Lhasa", volume 1, providing a basic city profile of Lhasa and summing up urban development and the situation in the old area and presenting the first results of our studies of historic Tibetan buildings. Volume 2 of the series, "A Clear Lamp Illuminating Historic Buildings on Lhasa's Barkor Street", published in late 1999, includes historic information and survey data of most buildings in the Barkor area in a trilingual format. A new Barkor survey map area was published simultaneously. Results of a 1996 data sharing cooperation between THF/LAP and the University of Trondheim were finally published in 2001, unfortunately without proper credit for our photos, maps and research contribution. Since late 1998 THF also publishes an Annual Report, listing project activities and project finances. Project engineer John Niewoehner wrote a separate report on THF's water and sanitation program. Since 2000, THF is working on a Conservation Master plan for the old city area. A draft version has been completed, and in 2002 we hope to make the entire plan accessible on this site. The master plan work has also resulted in the creation of an updated Lhasa valley map 2001. |
