Beijing Hutong Conservation Study

SKU#: 7
Price: $10
Description: The rapid re-development of Beijing’s ancient Hutong neighbourhoods is now widely recognized in China and abroad as being detrimental to the preservation of China’s cultural heritage. Yet alternative concepts are lacking. Water and sanitation systems are insufficient, the homes are over-crowded and residents lack the skills for adequate maintenance and repair of their ancient courtyard homes (si-he-yuan).
Since 2002, in co-operation with Tsinghua University School of Architecture and local city management departments, THF has studied several Hutong neighbourhoods in great detail, including both architecture and social conditions. This has resulted in a detailed 60-page report with survey maps.
