THF has completed the main phase of
the restoration of the Sangye Lhakhang, the main hall and oldest
building of the 14th century Nangra Serkhang monastery in Amdo.
Organized by Yutaka Hirako, a THF team of artisans have dismantled the
dilapidated Yuan-dynasty tiled roof and carefully restored it. Sangye
Lhakhang shares many architectural similarities with Shalu monastery in Tibet's Tsang
province. The main hall has an iconographic program typical for its
time, and the circumambulation passage preserves many fragments of
wall-paintings dating to an 18th century extension and restoration of
the monastery. Read more here.
