UNESCO awards THF Ladakh project

UNESCO representative R. Engelhardt presents THF with awardUNESCO Regional Advisor for Culture in the Asia-Pacific region, Mr. Richard Engelhardt, visited THF's Leh Old Town Conservation Project on May 3 2008 for a special award ceremony attended by local government representatives, community members, Ladakhi dignitaries and friends. The ceremony, which was recorded and later broadcast on local TV, consisted of speeches and presentations by THF/LOTI staff, local government representatives and by Mr. Engelhardt. At the end, the THF/LOTI team was presented with a brass plaque for the 2006 Asia & Pacific Heritage Award.

This was followed by a cultural show of traditional Ladakhi dances and lunch. Mr. Engelhardt was also given a tour of the old town and THF's project sites. In the evening, the Ladakh Hill Council (the elected local government of Ladakh) held a special dinner party in honour of the event. Also invited was Raja Jigmet Namgyal of the old royal family, whose NIRLAC organization also won an award for work done at Basgo.
