Invitation
Sangiin Dalai

Invitation

THF has been invited by Mongolian NGOs, members of the Mongolian government and international donors to consult on the rehabilitation of a number of historic sites. Tibetan Buddhism has made a well-known and deep historic impact on the country, and the architecture of the past 300 years is influenced by Tibetan and Chinese building traditions.

Sangiin Dalai

In consultation with all parties involved, it was agreed to begin with the restoration of the Sangiin Dalai monastery in the South Gobi district. Located along a trading route between China and Mongolia, it was a large complex of chapels and

assembly halls inside a traditional boundary wall (Tibetan lcags ri), surrounded by residential and service buildings.

Construction of the main temple began in 1772. It was closed after 1935 and sub-sequently used by the army for storage.
In 1974, the main assembly hall building accidentally burnt down. Six original buildings remain today within the original boundaries.
These are the Doorov iin dugan (Chinese style), the Judam iin dugan (Tibetan style), the Duinhor iin Dugan (mixed style), the Hailan iin dugan (Chinese style) and the Guureg iin dugan (Chinese style). The former Labrang building outside of the boundary is now used as clinic due to a private initiative.
After having completed a detailed site survey and condition analysis, THF is currently preparing to train local Mongolian workers to carry out the restoration. The training program, based on earlier THF projects, will involve Tibetan and Chinese experts. THF will utilize its experience with historic Tibetan Buddhist architecture and with historic Beijing architecture (see also the Beijing project), closely related to the style of Sangiin Dalai.
